Get involved at Port Hacking High School
Participating in extra-curricular activities is an excellent way to make the most out attending school. Port Hacking High School provdies a range of opportunities to cater to a diverse array of interests and talents.
Performing Arts
We aim to provide as many students as possible with a range of performance experiences. Our list of school based performance opportunities include; PortQUEST our student talent quest where students compete in stage categories across all Performing Arts disciplines, Year 8 Performing Arts Showcases, Ensembles Night, PortXL our ensemble showcase and awards evening as well as performances at various assemblies and subject specific showcases.
We offer a range of junior, senior and open ensembles in Dance. These ensembles give students opportunity to attend a range of events such as In the Spotlight Dance, Southern Stars, School Spectacular, Sutherland Dance Festival, subject to selection. They also perform at a range of school and community performances. These Dance ensembles perform a range of styles; 1st Semester is focused on Contemporary and Modern Dance Technique and 2nd Semester is focues on Jazz and Musical Theatre. All interested students are welcome in our Dance program and the ensembles are arranged via an audition process conducted at the commencement of the school year.
Subject to student interest we run a number of Junior and Senior Drama Ensembles. These groups work to enhance students’ knowledge of a variety of theatre styles and guide them to improve their improvisational skills, script reading techniques and ability to develop and create different roles and characters.
Our Choir, Junior Stage Band, Junior Concert Band and Drumsquad are open ensembles and interested students from year 7 to 12 are invited to attend. A Training Band is available during term one for students with little to no previous experience to enable them to learn a new instrument and create a pathway into our Junior Concert and/or Junior Stage Band. For our more advanced musicians we also offer a number of selective Music ensembles; PortaVoce is a vocal ensemble that specialises in performing A Capella (unaccompanied) repertoire; Jazz Combo is a small elite ensemble for students passionate about developing their skills in improvisation; Senior Stage Band for Jazz enthusiasts and Senior Concert Band. These ensembles have performed in a range of school based and community events including, Miranda Uniting Church Fete, Yowie Bay Twilight Markets, Miranda RSL sub branch Remembrance Day Service, Mark Vincent Mother’s Day Concert, Combined Concert with Sydney Wind Symphony.
The development of the students’ performance skills is supported by an annual Band Camp where the students engage in intensive workshops culminating in a concert for family members. Regular tuition is also available on a range of instruments, which students access before or after school or during school hours on a rotating roster.
Sport
Port Hacking High School has a strong sporting tradition. Teams are entered in a large number of external competitions organised by sporting associations on an annual basis.
Debating and Public Speaking
Our students have the opportunity to compete in a number of debating competitions, usually including The Premier’s Debating Challenge and Rotary Debating Knock-Out. They are provided guidance and practice in debating technique during lunch time and class sessions. Teams consist of four students, with one acting as the team’s adviser in the preparation room and during the debate. The competition is run in three sections: Year 7 & 8, Year 9 & 10 and Year 11.
Maths Club
The Mathematics Homework Club is runs on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, in the library, from the end of school until 4pm. This is an opportunity for students in all years to have a mathematics teacher on-hand as they complete homework, or prepare for assignments and assessments. Students may attend as often or as little as they need. Students also have the opportunity to assist as peer tutors.
