Research shows that mindfulness:
• Increases self-awareness, social awareness, and self-confidence
• Increases emotional self-regulation
• Reduces the severity of depression, anxiety and ADHD
• Builds resilience
• Sharpens focus and concentration.

Mindfulness is about focusing attention on the present and in so doing, makes us less vulnerable to unhelpful emotions which are triggered by thoughts of the past or worries for the future.

Our school counsellors and myself, in collaboration with Mr Papangelis, Head Teacher Wellbeing, and the Wellbeing Team, are working with a small group of girls from Years 9 and 10 on mindfulness practice to build resilience and self-esteem, founded in positive psychology. Students are meeting twice per week to develop their mindfulness practice. Themes such as gratitude and self-care guide discussions. The students also practice mindfulness and journalling.
