The Road to Wicked – Background Story

In term 4 2020 Lara Goyen took up an opportunity in Year 9 and completed the YES Program: ‘Enter the World of Beauty’. In Year 10, she wanted to do work experience, but nothing was available. It was her initiative that saw her approach Engadine Musical Society as a volunteer, and work on the musical “Wicked”. From this she observed and learnt from industry professionals, developed great skills and now has the beginnings of a fantastic portfolio. For Year 11/12, Lara has applied to study ‘Beauty Services: Makeup’, and is looking to study Special FX makeup in the future.

“I admire Lara’s talent, initiative and passion, as well as her confidence in pursuing something she loves. She is on a great path to make things happen for her future in an area of work she thrives in.”

Meet Lara Goyen

“My Aunt had contacts at Engadine Musical Society and was able to get me work experience in the makeup department on the upcoming production of “Wicked”. Initially, I was only going to be observing the makeup artist. However, on my first night, I was asked to help do the makeup for some of the cast members. I worked with a talented makeup artist who taught me so many different things that helped me develop my skills and knowledge around makeup.

I met loads of creative people and got to experience what it was like behind set.

One of my favourite things about “Wicked” was the unusual creatures and being able to exaggerate the makeup so the audience could see it. I loved being able to use the makeup and face paints to bring the characters to life. I even got to work solo on some nights.”

Lara Goyen – Year 10

“Wicked” tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.

Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.

Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
