Our champion open girls’ cricketers have done it again, with an impressive 109 run victory against Menai High in the semi final of the Sydney East Marie Cornish Shield last week.

Here’s the match wrap-up:

After a warm-up from special guest coach and minibus driver Ms Hadfield (which she claims was the catalyst for our victory), we lost the toss and were sent in to bat. While we were slow to start the scoring, with Eliza’s wicket falling in the second over, opener Makayla built into a nice rhythm. Kayla joined her for a 60 run partnership, with both girls hitting boundaries galore.

Shadae joined Makayla in the 15th over, smashing the ball softball style all over the park. When Makayla went down, copping a strong hit to the stomach, Annika took the lead with the bat, scoring 41 off 40 balls including 6 beautiful boundaries.

Massive shout-out to Emma and Diana, who both took to the pitch with the bat and gave it their all, despite the fast-paced Menai attack, and especially Charlotte, Ashlei and Elena who debuted with the bat, and did us all proud with their efforts. (You showed Mr Redrup, Elena!)

Captain Steph teamed up with Annika for a lovely 46 run partnership.

Special mention to player of the match Makayla who returned to the match in the 33rd over in a massive display of grit, hitting a bounty of fours in the closing overs, for a top score of 55 runs, bringing our total to a respectable 176 all out in the 40th over.

After lunch, our bowlers made quick work of the Menai batting line-up, with Annika’s pace taking two early wickets, and catches for Shadae and Annika off Makayla’s tricky spin attack, for a score of 4-4 at the end of the 5th. By the 25th, Menai were all out for 67. Annika, Makayla and Kayla took two wickets each, and  Steph and Eliza one each.

Beautiful economy from Annika with 2/7 from 5 overs, Kayla with 2/10 from 4 overs, and Steph on 1/1 from 2.4 overs.

In the field, the catches of Shadae, Annika, Steph and Kayla were impressive, and all of the girls fielded with determination. Good on you, Matilda, for giving your all, despite your sprained ankle!

It was a privilege to be out there at square leg, listening to you support each other, girls! Congrats on your teamwork and sportsmanship – you’re superb role models for us all.

(Thanks also to Alexia for scoring this one!)

We head into the Sydney East Grand Final now, opposition to be confirmed, but we have to wait until October. Bring on summer cricket!
